THE BRONX - The Jewish community in Riverdale is preparing for the Day of Atonement.

Synagogues, including the Riverdale Jewish Center, will hold a special service for the Yom Kippur holiday, which begins at sundown. Prayer services will also be held throughout Saturday on what's considered to be the holiest day of the year for the Jewish people.

Most of the day is spent in the temple, and there is no eating or drinking of any kind during the entire 25-hour period. Fasting will come to an end when the sun sets on Saturday, and is marked by a celebratory meal.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War.
