RIVERDALE - Pet owners and doctors say salt being spread to melt away ice is hurting dogs' paws and stomachs.

Some pet owners say they have had to rush their pets to the vet for raw and sore paws. Some dogs are also ingesting the salt, causing them to become violently ill.

Veterinary Dr. Michael Farber gave News 12 some tips to help keep dogs healthy and safe. He says to put boots on your furry friends while they are outside and to frequently give them warm baths to wash out the salt.

Residents who see issues with their dogs due to the salt are urged to bring them to a vet immediately.
