THE BRONX - A Bronx supermarket was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after the ceiling started to cave in and the roof showed signs of buckling.

It happened at the Pioneer Supermarket on Cypress Avenue at around noon. The supermarket's manager called 911 after he saw ceiling tiles falling down.

The building was evacuated and by the time the FDNY arrived, firefighters noticed the roof was visibly sagging. The FDNY evacuated the entire block after noticing cracks in the supermarket's ceiling.

Con Edison crews were also called to the scene to cut off gas and electric to the building as a precaution.

The Department of Buildings will determine if the market is structurally sound to reopen. Until then, it will remain closed.

The buildings adjacent to the structure are not under a vacate order and can remain open.
