BRONX - Buoyant gay couples cheered by supporters began marrying Sunday on the landmark day that New York became the sixth and largest state to recognize same-sex weddings.

Many same-sex couples in the Bronx wasted no time to tie the knot today.

After years of waiting reverend Carmen Hernandez and Doris Dearmas were finally wed Sunday.

The couple was the first of about 50 other couples to make it official in the Bronx.

The wedding vows come one month after the state passed the same-sex marriage bill, making New York the sixth state to recognize gay marriage. AP wire services were used in this report.
