THE BRONX - A student was rushed to the hospital today after being hit by a yellow school bus in Westchester Square.

The crash happened in front of the Santa Maria School on Zerega and Glebe avenues at around 7:30 a.m.

EMS says the child, who attends the school, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center with leg injuries, but is expected to be OK.

School officials say the crossing guard supposed to be on duty called out sick and was not replaced. Since the school is in a level B zone, a guard who calls out may not necessarily be replaced.

The principal of the school immediately released a letter to parents and guardians notifying them of the incident and stating that guidance counselors will be on hand to speak with students.
