THE BRONX - Bronx native Regis Philbin says he is against the city?s plan to cut down trees on Pelham Parkway.

The city plans to remove approximately 90 trees from Pelham Parkway in order to create new drainage systems, install streetlights and a guardrail.

Philbin, host of ?Live with Regis and Kelly,? took up the cause on his show. Several residents of the area also protested the city?s plan in July, saying the trees add character to their neighborhood. The project is slated to start this fall and is estimated to cost $36 million.

The borough president says that redoing the parkway is essential, but he has asked the Department of Transportation and the Department of Parks and Recreation to carefully review the plans to see if any trees can be spared.
