THE BRONX - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is introducing legislation designed to protect consumers against buying recalled products.

Schumer's bill would require the seller of a product to disclose whether it has been recalled. Sellers who fail to make the information available would be subject to a stiff fine.

The senator from New York also wants to create an online database where all recalled products would be listed.

Toyota recently recalled millions of cars due to an accelerator problem. Thousands of other products are placed under voluntary recalls every year.

AP wire services were used in this report.
