Series of brush fires hit Orchard Beach

THE BRONX - Firefighters spent most of Thursday afternoon battling a series of three brush fires in Orchard Beach. Over 10 acres in the northwest area of the park were affected, including the area known as Hunter Island. Streets were blocked and cars were turned away from the area, though no one was evacuated.Fire officials used two helicopters to battle the blaze as well as a specific type of air tanker that is used for fighting forest fires. The Parks Department believes that this was just a brush fire and do not suspect foul play. Brush fires are a common occurrence when the air is dry and hot. There were no reported injuries caused by the brush fire.
