BRONX - The owner of 'Books in the Hood' says she is doing all she can to provide neighborhood kids with a positive place to learn despite financial struggles.

The Longwood shop opened its doors in 2007, hoping to help children learn to read. The owner says she is doing it all without a salary and is usually three or four months behind on her rent.

Laverne Harris is a retired teacher and is selling educational materials and books at discounted prices. She plans to build up the children's section and network by using local schools to increase publicity and sales.
