THE BRONX - A smartphone app can help shed unwanted pounds.

"Lose It" is one of many apps available that keeps track of the number of calories of food ingested.

The app is basically a high-tech food journal. Users scan bar codes on grocery store items, and the app automatically tallies the calories.

Studies show that people who track their food intake are more mindful of what they ingest and are more likely to lose weight.

Abe Mohammadione used the app and dropped 75 pounds in a year without exercise

"I feel like I've gained a couple of years," he says. "A new lease on life to a certain extent, for sure."
