THE BRONX - With the Sochi Olympics in full swing, News 12 The Bronx decided to see if the Winter Games had any effect on local businesses.

Last year, the skating school at the Van Cortlandt Park Ice Skating Rink had 80 people enrolled. This year, the number has shot up to 150, many of whom are first-time skaters.

The rink's assistant manager attributes the growth in skaters to the popularity of the Olympics.

Gia, a 4-year-old first-timer, says watching ice skaters during the games inspired her to lace up a pair of skates and give it a go herself.

The rink will remain open to the public all week.
