Sonia Sotomayer, ex-Yankee Tino Martinez get honorary doctorates from Fordham University

THE BRONX - Two people special to the Bronx received honorary degrees from Fordham University during the school's graduation ceremony.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayer and former New York Yankees first baseman Tino Martinez received honorary doctorate degrees.

Sotomayer, who grew up in the Bronx, received her degree for her contributions to law throughout the years, rectitude and being the first Hispanic to serve on the Supreme Court.

Fordham officials say Martinez received his for giving back to young players and being a major role model and inspiration on and off the field.

Martinez's daughter Olivia also graduated with the Fordham senior class.

Sotomayer and Martinez exchanged autographs during the ceremony. Sotomayor received a signed baseball and Martinez, an autographed book.
