Soundview residents still waiting for return of cooking gas

SOUNDVIEW - Hundreds of Soundview tenants say they are fed up after having to live without cooking gas for nearly a year. Residents say the building on Evergreen Avenue has been without gas for eight months after Con Edison shut it off during a leak in December. The building's manager says gas lines in the entire building had to be replaced, and the city was supposed to inspect the facility. However, an audit in May further delayed the process. Families say they have relied on hotplates and take-out restaurants to get by. They say the ordeal is not only affecting them financially, but is proving dangerous for some residents. "The situation is not only difficult for families with small children," one resident said. "At least a quarter of the tenants who live here are senior citizens." The building's management company says the New York City Department of Buildings is scheduled to inspect the gas lines Monday. If all goes well, the gas will be turned on.Soundview tenants without electricity for nearly a week
