Soundview residents want better tree care as MillionTreesNYC plants more

Saint Lawrence Street neighbors say the borough’s existing

Saint Lawrence Street neighbors say the borough’s existing trees need more maintenance.

THE BRONX - A city initiative is bringing new trees to the borough, but some are concerned that older trees have been neglected.

MillionTreesNYC aims to plant 1 million trees over the next decade in parks and other public places citywide. The effort was started under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

However, residents along Saint Lawrence Street in Soundview say that the older, more established Bronx trees are not properly cared for. Their complaints include overgrown tree roots that have cracked sidewalks.

News 12 asked the Parks Department about the residents’ concerns. They said they can always use help.

"We're always looking for stewards to help us care for trees in their neighborhoods," they released in a statement.
