THE BRONX - People in Mott Haven rallied Monday to fix a problem that has been inconveniencing Bronx residents for decades.

The South Bronx Community Congress rallied Monday to have the elevator at the East 149th Street and Grand Concourse train station fixed. The elevator has been out of service for 30 years. The busy station serves the 2, 4 and 5 trains and is right next to Hostos Community College and Lincoln Hospital. The location means that the broken elevator directly affects many students and elderly people with disabilities.

The group says it began the battle to have the elevator fixed about two years ago when residents who use the station requested help. It claims the MTA has said there is not enough money to fix the problem.

The South Bronx Community Congress says one local City Council representative has agreed to discuss the situation with the group in hopes of finding a resolution. The group says it hopes to meet with the MTA soon.
