THE BRONX - Speech therapy is being used to help Bronx residents learn to speak properly again after injuries and surgeries.

One Bronx resident, a 4-year-old named Sarah, is learning to speak again after tonsil surgery eliminated her ability to say certain words in Spanish. Her family says Sarah's time with a speech pathologist at the Union Community Health Center has taught her how to communicate better by controlling how she breathes.

Speech pathologist Ernesto De Genova says one of the fundamentals of speech is controlling breathing and how it interacts with other actions, such as chewing.

Officials at the Union Community Health Center say not only children come for help, but also adults who have been injured.

Carmen D. Gonzales says she was in an accident three years ago and it caused her voice to be permanently hoarse. Gonzales says her pathologist makes her sing to regain her voice, and she can already notice a difference.
