Spitzer announces millions for Bronx, city schools

(11/26/07) SOUNDVIEW &舑; Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced Monday that approximately $80 million will be spent to improve Bronx schools.

The money is part of the Contracts for Excellence in New York&舗;s schools. A total of $258 million will be spent on city schools overall. The money will be used to reduce class sizes, improve teacher and principal qualifications, restructure some middle and high schools and expand full-time pre-k and kindergarten.

More money will also be used for &舠;time on task,&舡; which is designed to help struggling students.

The Department of Education has also agreed to five-year benchmarks for reducing class sizes.
