THE BRONX - St. Anselm Church in the South Bronx has been able to raise $70,000 for its restoration project, now in its third year.

The 121-year-old building, known to many as the cathedral of the Bronx, is the only Byzantine church in the entire country. Father Antonio Palacios says there is still much that needs to be done to restore the church.

"We have to campaign [for funds],” said Palacios. “Even if we have to go to the president of America, we will go."

The church has seen better days. The walls are pealing, the dome is cracking and some windows are broken. Church officials say the restoration is about 30 percent completed.
