MOTT HAVEN - Parishoners gathered at St. Luke's Church in Mott Haven for the church's first Sunday Mass since losing their beloved pastor.

Monsignor Gerald Ryan, who was New York's longest-serving pastor, died last week of stomach cancer at the age of 93. He had served St. Luke's since 1966.

Ryan was known for his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. He also opened a community center at the church as a safe place for children in the neighborhood.

A wake for Ryan will be held Monday at the church, with his funeral scheduled for Tuesday. A church administrator says he's expecting large crowds on both days.
