THE BRONX - Students at St. Pius V Elementary in the Bronx found out Friday that they will not be returning to their school in September.

The Archdiocese of New York announced the closure of St. Pius V, effective in June. St. Pius V is one of six schools across the archdiocese that will permanently close its doors in June. None of the others are in the Bronx. The archdiocese says that the closures are due to escalating operating costs and decreasing enrollments. St. Pius V's current enrollment is around 200 students.

The archdiocese will also merge St. Frances of Rome School with St. Anthony's School. The combined school will be housed in St. Anthony's on Matilda Avenue, which is newer and has a cafeteria and gym. St. Frances has neither.

The archdiocese says that any student affected by the closures will be assured spots in Catholic elementary schools nearby.
