THE BRONX - The cooling towers at a South Bronx plastics company are still being monitored after undergoing a thorough decontamination from Legionella bacteria.

Streamline Plastics on Park Avenue is one of five locations with cooling towers that tested positive for the bacteria, which can cause Legionnaires' disease when inhaled.

Owner Joe Bartner says that the cooling towers are cleaned once a month, and nothing like this has ever happened in the nearly 20 years since he's been in business. Fortunately, none of his 45 employees contracted the disease.

According to Bartner, the towers are being checked every day for at least a week. Health officials will also be taking another sample as a precautionary measure.

In total, there have been 86 reported cases of Legionnaires' in the Bronx, including seven deaths.

All other cooling towers that tested positive for Legionella have also been disinfected. Their locations are a Verizon office building, the Opera House Hotel, Concourse Plaza and Lincoln Hospital.
