THE BRONX - More than 500 maintenance workers, porters, and groundskeepers are picketing in Co-op City after their contract negotiations failed.

The union, Local 32BJ, said it was forced to strike when contract negotiations failed with Riverbay Management. The union says management did agree to provide health benefits but also insisted on freezing raises for the next four years.

The strike means that no one will be collecting garbage, making repairs or maintaining the grounds at Co-op City.
