Students call for peace in honor of classmate

SOUNDVIEW - Classmates of the 16-year-old girl who was shot outside the Soundview Educational Campus three weeks ago took to the streets to protest gun violence today.

The students, all classmates of Patricia Hernandez, planned the event on their own. The day started out with a peace summit where students read poetry, sang songs, put on skits and honored Hernandez and her family, who were on hand.

Afterward, the students took to the streets with parents, teachers and neighbors to call for peace. The day ended with a barbecue at a local park.

Students say they hope their event will raise awareness and lower crime in their neighborhood.

The Hernandez family says they've already moved out of The Bronx to escape street violence. Hernandez will start at a new school in New Jersey next year.Bronx teen recovering from gunshot woundPolice hunt for gunman who shot teen in hip
