THE BRONX - A new study from the Mackinac Center revealed that more than 60 percent of cigarettes sold in New York are sold illegally.

Cigarettes are currently around $12 a pack in New York, so some residents will drive to states like Virginia to buy them at $6 a pack.

The reason for the vast difference in cigarette prices is due to taxes.  In Virginia, cigarette taxes are only 30 cents, compared to a whopping $6 in New York.

The New York City Health Department says higher taxes are the most effective way to decrease tobacco use, particularly among children.
