THE BRONX - Although teen pregnancy numbers have decreased 30 percent citywide over the past decade, the Bronx is still the borough with the highest teen pregnancy rate, according to newly released figures.
The city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene data shows that 9.6 percent of teenagers in the Bronx become pregnant each year. The citywide rate is 6.9 percent.
The Health Department has unveiled a smartphone app that will allow teenagers to find resources about reproductive health services. The Teens in NYC-Protection app has information about where to find clinics, where to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases, methods of contraception and more.
Dr. Thomas Farley, the city’s health commissioner, says the app’s goal is to reduce unintended pregnancy and to reduce sexual transmitted disease.
