THE BRONX - A program at the children’s hospital at Montefiore Medical Center is focused on brightening the days of kids battling illnesses.

The staff and volunteers at Sunrise on Wheels come to the hospital every Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to add some much needed pep into the lives of the children there. They play with toys, board games, video games, sing, dance and paint in the hospital playroom.

"What we try to do is change their focus from fear and anxiety to one of fun and laughter and excitement," says Bonnie Flatow.

The volunteers also make bedside visits for those patients who cannot come out of their rooms.

Many patients and their siblings attend the Sunrise on Wheels Camp for free during the summer.

The program is funded by private corporations and donations.
