THE BRONX - With the summer booming across the borough, Bronx residents are being urged to review swimming safety tips with their children.

Christine Aleman, director and lifeguard at the Bronx YMCA, says that every child needs to be supervised at all times while swimming.

"Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children from ages of 5 to 12," said Aleman.

She says that children should wear non-inflatable flotation devices and not dive into water that is less than 9 feet deep. Beginner swimmers should be relegated to shallow water.

Public pools are scheduled to be opened on Thursday, June 27.
