THE BRONX - A motorcade of taxi drivers went to Albany to support the Taxi Driver Protection Act, which would make it a felony to assault a driver.

Taxi drivers say they need more protection while on the job. If passed, the act would make assaulting a driver a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison. Similar penalties are already in place to protect transit workers.

In 2008, two cab drivers were shot, one fatally. The bill was drawn up by state Sen. Eric Adams, who said it would hopefully discourage violence against drivers.

The bill is awaiting a committee hearing in both the Assembly and Senate.
