Tenants feeling down over elevator woes

Residents in Soundview say broken elevators in their high-rise apartment building have left them stranded for weeks, and they demand to know why it's taking

THE BRONX - Residents in Soundview say broken elevators in their high-rise apartment building have left them stranded for weeks, and they demand to know why it's taking the city so long to make the needed repairs.

Omar Holmes, who is wheelchair-bound, says he feels like a hostage in his unit, which is located on the 12th floor of the 21-story building at 1220 Croes Ave.

There are two elevators that serve the 160-unit building, one of which has been out of order for three weeks, while the other constantly breaks down.

Residents are forced to take the stairs, making it nearly impossible for the elderly and the disabled to get back into their apartments.

The housing complex has multiple violations, and tenants have opened up 30 complaints about the elevators with the Department of Buildings.

The building's management company, 1220 Croes Ave. Next Realty, says an elevator repairman inspected the broken elevator today and is waiting for a part to arrive.
