THE BRONX - News 12 is learning about how to prevent a dog attack after a 14-year-old pooch was nearly killed in Kingsbridge.

Nikki is stitched up and recovering after her owner says an unleashed German Shepherd got a hold of her. She’s now trying to find that dog's owner to get help with her $7,000 vet bill, and to prevent another similar incident.

Trainers at the Bronx Veterinary Center are meanwhile offering tips about what to do if a loose, menacing dog approaches. They say you should use commands that every dog should know, such as "sit," and never run away waving your hands because it will make you more of a target.
