PARKCHESTER - News 12 The Bronx is counting down the top stories of the borough of 2013 as voted by our viewers, and coming in at No. 10 is the closure of Zaro’s.

Zaro's Bread Basket on Hugh Grant Circle in Parkchester was shut down by the city's Department of Health this year. According to inspectors, Zaro's Bread Basket was infested with live mice, roaches and flies. It racked up 64 violation points in April.

When longtime customers heard why the establishment was shut down, they were stunned and sickened.

After five weeks of repairs, the Zaro family reopened their business that has been in the area since 1959. Owners say they tore apart and rebuilt the inside of the place. They also admitted that there were pipes and wires that were many years old.

The shutdown and subsequent rebuild of the establishment cost the owners more than $100,000.

The Zaro family says their bakery is now the cleanest store in the city. At its last inspection in September, the health department did not find one violation, which is virtually unheard of. They got a grade of "A."
