THE BRONX - News 12 The Bronx is counting down the top stories of the borough of 2013 as voted by our viewers. Coming in at No. 3 is the Kingsbridge Armory.
Earlier this year, there were rumblings that the expansive space would become an ice center, mall or community center. Hopes of renovating the space came into fruition once the Armory's developers were given the green light for the ice center.
A couple of weeks ago, the City Council approved plans for the world's largest indoor ice skating complex with nine rinks, a community space and a community benefits agreement, bringing in living-wage jobs.
The developers behind the plan must stick to certain stipulations, which include donating money each year to local charities, allowing kids to skate for free once in a while and a majority of the jobs must go to Bronx residents.
The center is expected to open in 2017, exactly 100 years from when the armory was built.
