Unemployed Bronx woman helps community blossom

THE BRONX - A Bronx woman struggling with unemployment has brought her Parkchester neighborhood together with a community garden.

While searching for a job, Nilka Martel kept a positive attitude by a using sunflowers and daffodils to beautify the area. She says dozens of people now volunteer to help keep the garden clean and that everyone is welcome, especially kids.

Martel hopes to turn her experience into a non-profit organization to help other Bronx residents transform their own neighborhoods.
