THE BRONX - Bronx families in need are getting a little help this Thanksgiving thanks to a local church.

The Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church on Hoe Avenue opened its doors today to hand out holiday packages to Bronx residents in need.

The packages contained groceries, personal care items and plenty of holiday cheer.

One patron said, "They gave us tickets last week and today we're picking up the turkeys, as you see, and feeding the community. They're doing a wonderful job."

The pastor at the Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church tells News 12 The Bronx that the church expects more than 800 patrons.

The pastor added that the need for these packages is particularly great this year because of congressional cuts to the food stamp program.
