BRONX - Bronx residents are irate that the word "negro" is given as an option for self-identification on the 2010 census questionnaire.

"I felt like it should've been just African-American or black - negro was not needed," says Kiana Hodge.

The U.S. Census Bureau has responded to the controversy, saying the word negro follows the guidelines given by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget for identifying black people in the United States.

The bureau, which conducts a census every 10 years, says it will consider revising the format for 2020 and phase the word out from its questionnaire.
