Vacate order issued after shelving collapse at Discount Outlet in Melrose

Officials say the shelves at the 99-cent store

Officials say the shelves at the 99-cent store may have been over-packed.

THE BRONX - A full vacate order has been issued at a Melrose 99-cent store where a shelving collapse sent eight people to the hospital.

The city's Department of Buildings also issued a violation to Discount Outlet, located on East 163rd Street and Morris Avenue, for failure to maintain the store. Its investigators say the shelves may have been over-packed, causing them to come crashing down in a domino effect on top of customers Monday.

Seven of those hurt suffered serious injuries, including broken bones, but everyone is expected to recover.

Debris scattered the sidewalk as fire crews dug the victims out. All of the inventory has since been thrown back inside the store, but cleanup has not yet begun. Neighbors say that the shelving was just installed about a month ago when the shop underwent renovations.

There was no structural damage to the actual building, according to fire officials.
