THE BRONX - Mourners turned out in force Monday for the 18-year NYPD veteran who was shot and killed while responding to a home invasion in Van Nest Friday.

Fellow officers, firefighters and other supporters attended a vigil outside the NYPD's 43rd Precinct building Monday night.

Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, who spent the past 10 years as a member of the 43rd Precinct, was shot in the head by 35-year-old Manuel Rosales, of Brentwood, Long Island, on Friday. Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, Tuzzolo's partner, was wounded in the leg.

As News 12 has previously reported, Rosales opened fire on the two sergeants with a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun as they approached him following reports that he had entered an apartment with a gun. Rosales, who also died in the gunbattle, had 17 prior arrests, according to police.

Mourners had already set up a steadily growing memorial outside the 43rd Precinct building. A police car marked with a thin blue line through its NYPD signage served as a reminder of Tuozzolo's loss. Children from a local kindergarten class created a memorial with blue and red handprints.

Ed Mullins, the president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, remembered Tuozzolo as a hero.

"What he did was the actions of a warrior," Mullins said. "He went after this violent individual, tried to apprehend him, and he just happened to lose in a gunfight."

Tuozzolo is survived by a wife and two young children.

A wake will be held Wednesday at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons funeral home in Bethpage, on Long Island, from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
