Vigil to be held for Thruway crash victims

(09/20/10) THE BRONX - A vigil will be held tonight at Victory Seventh Day Adventist Church for the family and friends of the 14 victims who died or were injured in a crash on the New York State Thruway this past weekend.

The victims were congregants from Joy Fellowship on East Gun Hill Road who were on their way to a banquet being held upstate on Saturday. Police say the rear tire on their van blew out, the driver lost control of the vehicle and the van then flipped near Woodbury.

Six of the passengers died in the crash, including the fellowship's pastor, Simon White, and his wife. Seven others are recovering at hospitals, most in critical condition. The driver of the van was released from a Poughkeepsie hospital yesterday.

Parishioners of Victory Seventh Day say they are expecting about 500 people to show up for tonight's hour-long vigil.
