THE BRONX - Cleaning up graffiti in the Bronx has typically been an uphill battle, but police officers and students are working together to tackle the problem in Throgs Neck.

About a dozen students from Catholic elementary school Villa Maria Academy were led by police officers from the 45th Precinct Tuesday as they painted over graffiti along the Hutchinson River Parkway.

The students will receive credit for their work toward their confirmations.

Officers have been working for about five years on the graffiti project. In that time, they say they have helped remove more than 1,000 graffiti tags around the 45th Precinct.

Residents who wish to get involved can call the 45th Precinct.
