THE BRONX - More than 100 volunteers showed up in Van Cortlandt Park this morning to clean up the grounds as part of the "Hands On New York Day."

New York Cares hosted the 17th annual event, which has drawn volunteers from more than 20 groups who raked leaves, picked up trash and painted benches to help keep the park clean.

"These parks are really the life-blood of the city, and getting people involved in them is something that makes the community stronger," says Wes Moe, of New York Cares.

Nearly 6,000 volunteers helped out with cleanup efforts at 70 green spaces throughout the city.
