Voters deliver major upset in 33rd state Senate District primary

THE BRONX - Less than 12 hours after defeating incumbent state Sen. Pedro Espada Jr., Gustavo Rivera was out and about in the Bronx, thanking his supporters.

Rivera won the Democratic nomination for the 33rd state Senate District seat last night. He says winning the primary means the Bronx is ready for change and he is ready to make it happen.

Rivera was born and raised in Puerto Rico and moved to the U.S. in 1998 to take classes at the CUNY Graduate Center. He's also no stranger to politics, having worked on local, state and national elections in the past.

Residents say they hope Rivera lives up to his promises of better living wage jobs, schools and safer parks.
