Monsignor Gerald Ryan had been a fixture in the Bronx Catholic community since 1966.

THE BRONX - The Catholic community in Mott Haven said goodbye to a beloved pastor who lost his battle with stomach cancer last week.

A wake was being held at St. Luke's Church today for Monsignor Gerald Ryan, New York's longest-serving pastor. He had become known for his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement and for opening a community center at the church as a refuge for neighborhood children.

His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday.
