THE BRONX - A longtime Bronx activist and president of Wakefield Taxpayers Association was laid to rest today.

Mary Lauro, 87, died Thursday after a battle with lung cancer. Her family and friends gathered at St. Frances of Rome this morning to pay their final respects. She was then buried at Gate of Haven Cemetery.

Lauro, who was also a chemist and journalist, served the Bronx for more than 35 years as an activist. Friends say she was an iconic activist and truly cared about her community.
