ORCHARD BEACH - More than 2,500 people took part in the Walk Now for Autism Speaks event at Orchard Beach Sunday in an effort to raise funds and awareness about the developmental disorder.

According to the Autism Speaks website, the family event raises money for research into the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the United States. They say 1 in 68 children is diagnosed with autism.

The walk featured live music and various arts and crafts.

All proceeds will be going directly to Autism Speaks for research and family services in the Bronx, and throughout the country.

Organizers say the event raised more than $140,000 for the developmental disorder
