Weather worsening as Hurricane Irene approaches The Bronx

THE BRONX - As Hurricane Irene inches closer to The Bronx, weather conditions are getting worse across the borough.

Crews with the Parks Department are out trying to keep storm drains clear to facilitate drainage and prevent flooding.

Officials say that if they don't try and stop the flooding, power transformers may short out, plunging neighborhoods into darkness.

In coastal areas of the Bronx, the biggest concern isn't keeping the lights on but hoping that the storm surge doesn't inundate homes in those neighborhoods.

But even in this weather, Con Ed crews are stationed throughout The Bronx to ensure that if the power does go out in an area that they are there to restore it as quickly as possible.
