RIVERDALE - A decrease in on-street parking in Riverdale is surprisingly making residents in the area happier.

West 245th Street is both a residential area and a big hub for transportation with the Riverdale Metro-North stop down the road. There is also an elementary school on the street.

With people parking on both sides of the steep hill, the road was packed with cars trying to navigate through the narrow road space.

Community Board Eight petitioned the city's Department of Transportation for 'No Standing' signs on the street.

Now, there is wide open space for two lanes of traffic and enough room for pedestrians to walk.

Many residents say although the new signs eliminate parking, there will still be congestion when parents come to pick up their children from the SAR Academy. But they say this is a good step in insuring the safety of both pedestrians and drivers.
