THE BRONX - Westchester Square has installed several security cameras throughout the community to help improve and reduce crime in the area.

Four high-definition military-grade cameras have been stationed at high-traffic spots and busy pedestrian locations. Over the next several months, a total of 14 cameras will be in full operation throughout the district.

The live cameras are monitored by the 45th Precinct and the Westchester Square BID. They are able to rotate 360 degrees and provide a sharp image when zooming into objects and people. Besides a computer, the cameras can be controlled through a phone app to which the Westchester Square BID chairman and executive director have access.

Community leaders say the new surveillance system will improve safety and help deter crime.

The Westchester Square BID hopes to have the rest of the remaining cameras up and running by the end of this year.

In the next couple of weeks, signs will be put up in the locations that have surveillance cameras to inform residents that they are being watched. On average, about 100,000 people visit Westchester Square a day.
