THE BRONX - Residents of Westchester Square are demanding an end to what they say is growing violence in their community.

They're accusing young people of loitering near area businesses, starting fights and committing gang violence.

Police say a 16-year-old student was stabbed at a nearby McDonald's earlier this week. Two other teens were arrested in connection with the crime and charged with gang assault.

Community members met with police Wednesday to address the problem.

Some of the residents are laying the blame on the city's decision to allow cellphones in schools. They accuse high school students of using their phones to set up fights.

One solution floated by community members is to build a Police Athletic League center in the neighborhood to give young people an alternative way to spend their time.
