WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's affordable health care law is set to take effect Tuesday, but do you know how it works?

Obamacare will allow the roughly 48 million Americans without health insurance to start shopping for a plan at Healthcare.gov.

There will be several competitive plans to choose from, and all must offer the same coverage and a monthly premium. However, the deductibles and co-pays will vary among plans.

The president has touted his signature bill as providing good health insurance for the price of your cellphone bill. The White House puts that at roughly $100 a month or less, but that's if you qualify for tax breaks and subsidies based on income.

Eligible people will have until Dec. 14 to choose a plan in order for coverage to start Jan. 1.

Open enrollment ends on March 31, 2014, and if you don't have insurance by then, you could be slapped with a fine due to a controversial individual mandate.
