The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge opened to drivers in 1939, one day before the start of the New York World's Fair in Flushing Meadows.

THE BRONX - The Whitestone Bridge turned 74 today.

The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge opened to drivers in 1939, one day before the start of the New York World's Fair in Flushing Meadows. Robert Moses had the bridge built in just 23 months.

In its first year, 6.3 million vehicles crossed the span. In 2012, 39.5 million vehicles crossed the bridge.
